Jakhu or Jakhoo Temple, is one of the prime attractions of the hill station in Shimla. Jakhoo temple is an ancient and famous temple in India. Deriving its name from Hindi word Yakhsa-mythological characters in Hindu mythology who are a link between human and gods.
Jakhu Temple lacally known, the Hanuman Mandir. The Jakhu Temple of Shimla is dedicated to the monkey God, lord Hanuman and is believed to be in existence from the times of Ramayana.This temple of lord Hanuman, the most faithful aide to lord Rama.
In remembrance of lord Hanuman, by the Sage Yaaku, this temple of lord Hanuman was constructed. The statue is considered as world's tallest statue at 108 feet at the highest elevation of over 8100 feet, which surpasses the current tallest statue of 'Christ the Redeemer', which measures at 98 feet and stands at an elevation of 2296 feet in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
When lord Hanuman visited Jakhu hill, this Jakhoo Hanuman temple was formed, during the famous fight between Rama - Ravana. A priest diagnosed Lakshmana and said that he needed a particular Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas to cure Lakshmana. Hanuman was sent to get that herb, in the Himalayan range that is the only medicinal herb which could have save his life was available.
But got confused, so as to which was the particular herb. Finally, he got that herb and flew to the kingdom of Ravana, Lanka. After Lakshmana was cured, Hanuman went back to place the mountain in its original site. He stayed on top of the Jakhu hill.The temple has been built around the place. The idol can be seen in the temple till date along with the foot prints of the monkey god Lord Hanuman. In and around the temple, there are hundreds of monkeys.
